Perched along the Vindhya ranges at an altitude of 2,000 feet, Mandu has eclectic creations combining the charming assertion of the Afghan mode with the great cultural heritage of the Turkish people.<\/p><p>Each of Mandu&#8217;s structures is an architectural gem, like the massive Jami Masjid and Hoshang Shah&#8217;s Tomb, which is believed to be the inspiration for the master builders of the Taj Mahal.<\/p><p>Floating over its reflection, the Jahaz Mahal in Mandu looks like a ship that&#8217;s about to sail. However, for centuries this ship made of stone and mortar never did. Instead, it stood floating over the twin lakes, bearing a silent witness to Mandu&#8217;s long, rich and varied history.<\/p><p>The grand palaces are still alive with royal romance while the gateways (Darwaza) speak about the history of imperial conquests.<\/p><p>The legendary love story of Baz Bahadur and Roopmati gave birth to the construction of the Roopmati Pavilion and Rewa Kund. The abandoned ruins of Hathi Mahal and Ashrafi Mahal have interesting stories associated with their existence. The intriguing site of the Bagh caves has the power to bridge the events between the bygone centuries.<\/p><p>There are myriads of places to see in Mandu which include forts, palaces, gateways, and temples. With its open pavilions, balconies overhanging the water and open terrace,\u00a0Jahaz Mahal\u00a0is an imaginative recreation in stones of a royal pleasure craft.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-51ac3c7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"51ac3c7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hindola Mahal<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca7aa15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ca7aa15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An audience hall, it derives the name of &#8216;swinging palace&#8217; from its sloping sidewalls. Superb and innovative techniques are also evident in its ornamental facade, delicate trellis work in sandstone, and beautifully moulded columns.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f4a3444 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f4a3444\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Ashrafi Mahal\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8322a8e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8322a8e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Built by Hoshang Shah&#8217;s successor, Mahmud Shah Khilji, this &#8216;palace of gold coins&#8217;, facing the Jami Masjid, was conceived as an academic institution (madrassa). In the same complex, he built a seven-storeyed tower to celebrate his victory over Rana Khumba of Mewar, of which only one storey has survived. Also in ruins is the tomb which was intended to be the largest structure of Mandu, but collapsed due to hasty and faulty construction.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-022ddef elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"022ddef\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Baz Bahadur Palace<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4c2fd47 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4c2fd47\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Built by Baz Bahadur in the early 16th century, the palace&#8217;s unique features are its spacious courtyard surrounded by halls and high terraces with a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1735d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a1735d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Darwazas (Gateways)<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f7056e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4f7056e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The 45 km parapet of walls that encircle Mandu are punctuated by 12 gateways. Most notable of these is Delhi Darwaza, the main entrance of the fortress city, for which the approach is through a series of gateways such as Alamgir and Bhangi Darwaza, through which the present road passes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af7da7a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"af7da7a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Hoshang Shah's Tomb<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-be870ee elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"be870ee\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>It is India&#8217;s first marble edifice and is adorned with a magnificently proportioned dome, marble lattice work, porticoed courts, and towers to mark the four corners of the rectangle. Shah Jehan sent four of his great architects to study the design and draw inspiration from the tomb.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9858c57 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9858c57\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Jami Masjid\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-997c8b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"997c8b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Inspired by the great mosque of Damascus, the Jami Masjid was conceived on a grand scale, with a high plinth and a huge domed porch. One is struck by the enormousness of the building&#8217;s proportions and the mosque is enclosed on all sides by huge arcades with a rich and pleasing variety in arrangements of arches, pillars, number of bays, and rows of the dome above.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b5b36c5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b5b36c5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Nilkanth Mahal<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36a164c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"36a164c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Belonging to the Mughal era and close to the Nilkanth shrine (the sacred Shiva shrine), this palace was constructed by Shah Badgah Khan for Emperor Akbar&#8217;s Hindu wife. A 90 km trip to the 6th-century rock-cut Bagh caves, a 140 km excursion to the district of Jhabua, known for its colourful Bhagoriya festival, the mediaeval town of Dhar, just 40 km from Mandu, which is also the district headquarters, Burhanpur, the ancient gateway to south India, 220 km from Mandu. The summers are hot, and the temperature can rise as high as 46 Degrees Celsius (115 Degrees Fahrenheit), while in the winters it can dip to below 5 Degrees Celsius (41 Degrees Fahrenheit). After the scorching heat, monsoons arrive towards the first week of July and the rainy season stretches till mid-September. Major mail and express trains stop here. Alternatively one can disembark at Indore, which is well-connected to Delhi and Mumbai by rail.<\/p><p><b>By Road:\u00a0<\/b>Mandu is well-connected with regular bus services from Indore and Dhar (40 km). From Indore, there are direct buses to Mandu from Gangwal Bus Stand and Sarawate Bus Stand. The journey usually takes around 3 hours. Buses to Dhar are available frequently from the two bus stands.
